The latest video from our session at Fez Micropub in Margate, Kent has just been released on our popular Youtube channel. This time the JONNY HEPBIR TRIO have opted for a classic instrumental from the 1930’s, ‘Topsy’. This catchy little number was a hit for Benny Goodman in 1938 where it rose to number 14 in the charts!
It was first recorded a year earlier by Count Basie and was written by Edgar Battle and Eddie Durham. We were wondering to the origins of the name and the earliest mention was of ‘Topsy the elephant‘ (1875-1903). Topsy the elephant’s story is very sad indeed and just goes to show what horrors befell these awesome creatures at the hands of humans.
I’d like to think the tune was named as a tribute to this poor animal, elephants are awesome and so is this great jazz classic.
Here it is served up in the Trio’s cool Gypsy swing style!
